How to mark a content item as "ready for approval"

Is it possible to have another content item state in between Saved and Published (like "Saved and ready for approval")?

Our content authors and approvers (publishers) are 2 completely different sets of people. The content authors need to be able to update a content item in multiple sessions before releasing the item for content approval and publishing. An approver has no way of knowing if an author has completely finished all required modifications on an item. It can only be known that an item has been modified.

Is there any way of achieving this with the out-of-the box Orchard facilities? If not, do you know of an existing gallery module that would help?

There is no such built-in state but you could add e.g. a boolean field to indicated an item being approved. You can use Workflows for example to send admin a notification for approval then.
