displaying a list on screen with content type

Normally you would create a "content type" of car and add your cars into Orchard (you could also do an import of cars via the import/export module).

Then you would create a "query" and a "projection" to list the cars.

If you really want your table to be a custom db table, then that's a little more complicated, as you would have to e.g. write some code to implement a class that inherited from ContentPartRecord, and a service to get the records. Google is your friend for this, as there are plenty of examples out there, e.g. http://weblogs.asp.net/bleroy/archive/2011/02/21/storing-non-content-data-in-orchard.aspx

Why are you trying to pull the data directly from the database? It sounds like you're missing out on some of the key functionality of Orchard.
