I have spent quite some time to make 'Placement.info: Match path=' working!
I wonder what I'm doing wrong because all the Doc uses Path= (Capital P!).

On my system ONLY when using path= (lower case p!) it works!
PS: This is the only statement in my Themes Placement.info

<Match path="/plants/*">
           <Place Fields_Common_Text="/AsideSecond:12"/>
           <Place Fields_MediaPicker="/AsideSecond:2"/>
</Match>

... it's not that important now where I know .. but might be for others running into the same issue!

thanks for your time

I ran into the same issue and found that I needed to add a tilde to my Path. When changing it to a lowercase "path" it might not be working as you describe, it's just not seeing the Match "path" tag and moving on to your Place element. Try adding a tilde "~" in your Path like below.
     <Match Path="~/plants/*">
         <Place Fields_Common_Text="/AsideSecond:12"/>
         <Place Fields_MediaPicker="/AsideSecond:2"/>
     </Match>
