Very slow start up (> 20 mins) on several development machines

We have an issue, not sure what is causing it, wondering if anyone else has experienced the same.

We have a large Orchard site with about 100 modules. The site has been in production for a year and is comfortably handling 300K unique visitors per day on Azure with autoscaling in place using WASABI.

On our development machines the site usually takes about 30 - 60 seconds to spin up from scratch. However, recently - and seemingly randomly - we have had instances where on the first start up the w3wp.exe process would get "stuck" at about 50Mb private memory and zero CPU usage. It would stay this way for a long time (20 to 90 mins) before the site eventually starts to serve pages.

If, during this long start up time, we attach a debugger and "break all", we get "No symbols are loaded for any call stack frame", which suggests it's hanging before it gets to managed code.

We've experienced this on at least four of our development machines so far over the last few weeks - it's happened on each of them 2 or 3 times. The majority of the time it starts up fine. Does anyone have any ideas?

Greg,
Did you manage to find a solution, or the source of the problem? I think ive run into something similar before....

Do you keep the app_data folder in your repository with a number of test sites as hosts? If that is the case then the solution can be quite easy.
