I'm new to Orchard and don't quite get how to implement certain features. I've recently found the Youtube field but don't quite understand how to use it. Can someone help me out please? thank you in advance.

Add it to the content type where you want to use it.

I'm a little confused though. I've created a new content part with the Youtube field added but how do I display that on the pages? I went through the tutorial on how to create new types. When creating the new 'Event' type it displays it on it's own page. Does that mean that each youtube video would have to be on it's own page? How do I show a video in the content area of the homepage?

Now you got me confused. On this site: I have a content type, to which I added the YouTube field from the content type editor. Then, the content item editor for this type started enabling me to choose a video. Once viewed, the item shows the video right there, according to my placement:

  <Place Parts_Common_Metadata="-"/>
  <Match ContentType="Video" DisplayType="Summary">
    <Place Fields_Contrib_Youtube="Content:1"/>
