Pushing Updates to production (Azure)

Still very new to Orchard so excuse my ignorance. How do you manage updates to the production environment without blowing away existing content? So if the Orchard production site has installed some new modules or themes (independently through the gallery) that my development environment doesn't have. And if I then publish the application again to Azure does it blow away any references to modules previously installed?

I couldn't find any documentation that refers to pushing updates, just the initial install or upgrading versions.

Never install modules directly in production. You should disable the gallery feature on your prod servers.
