I need to come up with an RSS feed for specific tags.  I didn’t find anything on the web.  How can this be done with Orchard, using 1.1.3.0?

This may get you started: http://weblogs.asp.net/bleroy/archive/2010/04/07/rss-feeds-in-orchard.aspx. If it's a little too technical, I could write a follow-up addressing that specific scenario. Hey, I could even integrate that somehow into my tag cloud module maybe.

Bernard,

I’ll be honest, the MVC pattern is Greek to me, I look at the source code of Orchard and have NO idea where to begin. I don’t understand the terminology, design or architecture. Trying to compare to regular ASP, ASP.NET, heck even PHP I can understand. Looking for punishment, I chose something hard and hopefully I can pick it up. My domain and blog are something I take pride in so I’m determined to figure stuff out. More beginner articles would be welcomed by me, maybe an Orchard 101 starter set of videos, articles. Maybe there is something and I haven’t looked at it yet. I don’t know the target audience for Orchard, I’m getting the feeling I’m not it. J

I’ve been very impressed with the performance of my site, yet overwhelmed trying to figure out basic stuff. The community response has been awesome! Take the thread on the favicon.ico, my logs are littered with 404’s looking for the /favicon.ico. In internet terms, I’m “old school” . My OCD tries to have a great user experience on my site. Some of the challenges have been mixing a website with stuff on disk and Orchard, I’ve had to use app migrate config on more than one occasion. I’m glad I have a deep understanding of IIS along with a lot of experience “IT Pro stuff” with .NET. So would I recommend Orchard, I’m glad I chose it and I think it’ll do everything I want it to, just need hand-holding along the way.

So in short, yes a basic article with steps would be welcomed how to do what I need. Your article although complete, assumes too much where a person would know basics. I’m not sure how others on the list perceive my observations. Hope not too bad. J

Steve.

You might want to also get an intro to MVC. Jon Galloway did a good roundup of various tutorials and the like here:

http://weblogs.asp.net/jgalloway/archive/2011/03/17/asp-net-mvc-3-roundup-of-tutorials-videos-labs-and-other-assorted-training-materials.aspx

At least go through the Getting Started and possibly MVC Music Store. It's a bit easier to understand Orchard if you can see which parts are MVC and which parts are new systems Orchard has built on top of that.

That was basically my learning curve; I had a simple events booking website to build and I jumped into MVC 3 to build that. Then I found Orchard which I used for my website, so it was extended the concepts I'd just learnt, rather than jumping in completely at the deep end :)

Thanks for the tips.  I'll check them out.  I also downloaded the source code locally and going through it see how things interact with my site.  I think Orchard has a bright future, it has to polish in some areas for "normal" users like me to adopt and get going.  I'm sysadmin with lots of IIS, ASP.NET and general .NET experience.  I'm not completely lost as I might have first mentioned, it is different for sure.  From my point of view, the perf has been great.  I've been able to do everything except the specific tags RSS feed, which I need.   I hope someone can provide that functionality.

Cheers,

Steve

I read through the "RSS Feeds in Orchard" link above but am having issues with getting rss feeds from the taxonomies module.  I managed to write the appropriate code so that the RSS link is rendered in the header when I hit a url like /wine-articles/germany/baden (/rss?containerId=22).  However when I hit that link in an RSS reader I get the taxonomy details but none of the items that belong to that taxonomy.

I found the items selector at line 63 (v1.2) of ContainerFeedQuery.cs where I'm getting 0 results, but I'm unsure how to change it to work with the taxonomies module.

Thanks,
Matt

RSS in taxonomy is on my task list. If anyone wants to implement it (based on the current dev branch) then I am ok to include it withing the module. Otherwise just wait a little bit, some previous feedback will be served first.

So, finally I implemented it as it was easy. You can get it from the project's website, in source code, dev branch. http://orchardtaxonomies.codeplex.com

Thanks Sebastien.

I'm new to Orchard and tried copying (over-writing) the source to my Modules/Contrib.Taxonomies folder and then doing a recompile.  All sorts of errors (I grabbed latest source not just the RSS changes).  I cant seem to find documentation on updating a module from the source - can you please point me in the right direction? Is there a way to do it without loosing any data?

Thanks,
Matt

Just delete the module's folder, then copy in the new source. Data is stored elsewhere, either in the database or in App_Data, so you've no danger of losing anything.

The current dev branch of te taxonomy is definitely  not compatible with old ones. You need to completely clean the previous install, or start with a new one. It's sad but it was needed to start the new feature set, which is becoming along really nicely. So far the RSS, a new Menu widget, and content widget.

I added a new feature to http://orchardproject.net/gallery/List/Modules/Orchard.Module.Vandelay.TagCloud/1.2 that adds RSS for tags.

Hi Bertrand,

Thank you for adding this functionality although the article still assumes the person is a developer. I’m not sure how to implement into my site. J

Never mind, I had to add another condition to my root web.config url rewrite rules. I have lots of requests for just “rss” which I handle with a URL Rewrite rule. I have this redirect to the main url feed link.

<rule name="Redirect iislogs.com to rss" stopProcessing="true">

<match url="rss$" />

<conditions>

<add input="{QUERY_STRING}" pattern="containerid" negate="true" />

<add input="{QUERY_STRING}" pattern="tag=" negate="true" />

</conditions>

<action type="Redirect" url="http://www.iislogs.com/rss?containerid=162" />

</rule>
