any simple method of adding a file to the root of a multi-tenancy site, for the purpose of authenticating for google webmaster tools, or for bing?

You could use a Controller and Action to do this very easily. Also for Google Webmaster tools, can't you add a meta tag into the page header?

you can use meta tag, but I prefer to use the file method. once you auth with 3 or 4 se's, you're packin a lot of extra meta around that is just cluttering the page up.
