Testing email messaging on local machine

Nov 20, 2010 at 11:09 PM

Hi,

I'm using Win 7 to test locally and unfortunately neither IIS or Casini have a mail server included as far as I can tell. I normally just set my web config to use a drop directory when I'm testing locally.

I'm creating a module that uses the Orchard.Email module to send emails and I'm finding it hard to test. Is there any way I can set it to use a drop directory?

Thanks,

Richard Garside.

Get a GMail account and point to their SMTP server. This being said, IIS does have SMTP, but I think you need to manage it through the old IIS 6 manager console (don't ask me why).

I've got a mailserver set up on my server that has Win Server 2008 installed. It does use IIS 6 for the management. I can't find a way of installing this on Win 7 for some reason. I'll ask in an IIS forum about this.

I tried using GMail, but it just kept timing out. It might have been a network issue or my google account might not be configured to allow smtp connections, but I got tired of trying to figure it out. It may also have have been because the first emails I sent were all blank and Google might have thought they were spam.

Yes, it's gone from Win 7: http://serverfault.com/questions/64753/smtp-server-on-windows-7. That's lame. People apparently have had some success with http://smtp4dev.codeplex.com/ for development purposes.

SMTP 4 dev looks good. Will definitely check that out.

This is the one I use to test the module (SMTP 4 Devs). The Folder Delivery method was cut :/ do you need a real server. I agree it would have been great for tests.
