Feature Request: Display Type customisation for Taxonomies

We can customise our Display Type for Projections which is a really cool feature and I love using it. I really think this feature should be added to Taxonomies also (as I much prefer to use Taxonomies than heaps of projections for obvious reasons).

I'm willing to have a crack at implementing it if the idea gains traction with the Orchard Committee.

Although I'm unsure whether the DisplayType should be set on the Taxonomy, or the individual Terms. Or both with inheritance?

Are there any other considerations?

Sounds like a great idea. I would configure the display type on whatever is going to render the terms or the items tagged with them. For example, if I use a widget to render terms, I would expect to be able to set the display type at that level. Setting it at the term, or worse, taxonomy level would be too rigid, and wouldn't allow you to display the same thing in different ways. Unless of course I misunderstood.

Ah, I think I know what you mean. I haven't an example in front of me at this very moment, but does the Term Widget allow you to set the Display Type for that particular widget?

My thinking was to basically override the "Summary" default with whatever the user decides to set, but, of course defaulting to "Summary" if nothing is set. (The reasoning for the idea of setting it at the Taxonomy level was so I didn't have to set the Display Type for each and every Term, especially if new ones are added.)

The problem I'm trying to solve is I want to use Taxonomies to display several different Content Types (each with infinite Content Items) in categories. Taxonomies is the perfect solution for this filtering/grouping of content. However I need them to all display with a common Display Type (a custom "Tile" appearance) which isn't "Summary" - as I want to reserve the default "Summary" Display Type for, well, a simple "Summary" of the Content Item for when it is displayed in other contexts (such as a Widget).

I may well have to go ahead and customise the module anyway for this particular project, but I was hoping if a solution could be devised which might make it into the Core, I wouldn't have to fork this project and have it sit at 1.7.*/1.8 forever.

Right, I think it should be done by modifying the widget (and other similar places, as needed).

I think adding it to Term Widget is also a great idea - but I need to control the DisplayType when viewing a Term in "Detail" (for lack of a better description).

I need to do it for my project anyway, so I'll create a fork and let people review the changes/idea.

For the widget, I don't see what would be added to what the projections are doing already.

Being able to customize the query/layout of the taxonomies though might be a good idea. People have requested to be able to order the list for instance on custom parameters. I think integrating the taxonomy rendering with projections might be the best idea actually. But would need to be discussed first, to make things right.

So with this idea, when I view a Term (such as localhost:30321/my-taxonomy/my-term), the rendering is actually handled by the Projections Module. Which I could then somehow define my layout with any of the available Layout options.

That sounds like a fantastic solution (I'm getting excited at the possibilities) - although is probably somewhat above my "pay grade". The Projections Module is a wonderful tool; but its sophistication is well beyond my current skillset.
