How to Install Orchard

To install Orchard using Web PI, follow these instructions:

Web PI will detect your hardware environment and install the application.

Alternatively, to install the release manually, download the Orchard.Web.1.0.20.zip file.

The zip contents are pre-built and ready-to-run. Simply extract the contents of the Orchard
folder from the zip contents to an IIS virtual directory (or site root) and then point your
browser to the site. You can also just extract to a local folder and open the included project
file in Visual Studio to run it under the local ASP.NET Development Server (Cassini).

How to Reset Your Site Data

The App_Data directory contains database and settings documents produced during setup.
The contents of this directory are protected from download by visitors to your site.

To completely reset your site** (destroy all data, starting from the setup screen again),
you can delete the contents of this directory. This action is irreversible!

Note: If you have the project open in Visual Studio, the contents of this directory may
not be visible in Solution Explorer. To view the files, right-click the App_Data directory
and "Open Folder in Windows Explorer" (or click the "Show All Files" button in Solution Explorer).

What's new?

The main difference between this version and 0.9 is bug fixes.

What file to download?

If you just want to use Orchard and don't care about the source code, Orchard.Web.1.0.20.zip
is what you want to use, preferably through the WebPI instructions.

If you want to take a look at the source code, or only want to create new modules but do
not want to write patches or contribute to the core, OrchardSource.1.0.20.zip is fine.

It is the source code for Orchard.Web.1.0.20.zip, so just as Orchard.Web.1.0.20.zip,
it won't be the latest version of the code, only the latest stable release.

If you want something more up to date than that, or if you want to write patches or modify
the core modules, you can enlist in our source control by following the instructions here:

Alternatively, you can just download the latest version by going to the Source Code tab
and clicking "Download" on the top-right corner under "Latest Version".

There are always at least two active branches: the dev branch, which is likely to be unstable
but very up to date, and the default branch, which is the result of the latest iteration and
should be fairly stable at all times, but not as stable as Orchard.Web.1.0.20.zip.

Unless you have a good reason, sync to default.

Who should use this software?

This software is in version 1.0. What we mean by 1.0 is that the code is in a stable state and
constitutes a solid foundation for building applications, themes and extensions. Some end-user
features may still be missing though and suggestions are welcome in the discussion forums.

You are allowed to use this software in any way that is compatible with the new BSD license.

Compatibility with ASP.NET WebPages and ASP.NET MVC

The 1.0 release of Orchard is only compatible with ASP.NET MVC 3. In particular this means that if you have installed WebMatrix Betas or RCs, you need to run the MVC 3 installer or to uninstall WebMatrix.

Note: if you don't have ASP.NET MVC or WebMatrix installed, you are fine and you don't need to install them first as Orchard will then use its own copy.

New design for the administration interface, and several usability workflow improvements.
Setup recipes: at setup, you have a choice between three installation profiles. It is possible to create your own.
Module recipes: modules can specify a set of recipe actions to optionally perform when installing, such as downloading and installing dependencies.
Improved module and theme installation workflow.
Improved widget and layer management.
Improved list management.
A new media picker dialog on the rich editor for uploading, inserting, and browsing media items.
Improved MSDeploy packaging and deployment from Visual Studio.

Available in the Orchard Gallery for 1.1:

Import/Export: transfer metadata, data, and settings between sites.
