Any way to add a rowversion or timestamp field to a custom database table

I'm fairly new to customizing orchard and i am trying to create a custom db column of type timestamp (SQL server's row version). In a custom project I am trying to rebuild in Orchard I use the timestamp field to show if the record could have been modified since the last time it was synced.

Is there away to specify a override for the DBType when adding a column. If there is no way to add timestamp / rowversion because I believe the timestamp is a specific field in MS SQL Server and is different or not present in other Database Systems, is there another way I can do this? How could I manually implement this? Maybe linking into event so that every time a record is created / saved the rowVersion field is incremented.
