After installing Orchard v. on a new Windows Server 2012 R2, the Layout editor is missing when creating a new page or editing an existing one.

The issue is only present on this server, and not previous servers where I have tested Orchard.

As far as I can tell, both installations are identical, except for one using SQL Express (the one with the issue) and the others using SQL standard. Both installations of IIS have the same components installed too.

What could be breaking the Layout editor? A component in IIS? Or some IIS configuration setting?

Please help.

After further observation, the issue is present on all servers.

It can only occurs with IE 11 when using a host name in the URL. It works fine when using the IP. In other browsers it works either with IP or host name.

The issue will be observed when using the host name in the URL. e.g. http://MyServerName/ .

The cause is more likely the loopback check preventing the application from working properly.

The solution is to use assign a CNAME or ALIAS and avoid using the machine's host name. e.g. http://SomeAlias.mydomain.com/

That most likely indicates some error going on (which is swallowed and logged by Orchard, and prevents the layout part editor shape from being created and displayed). Anything of interest in your log files (App_Data/Logs)?
