User customisation of their homepage layout ala DropThings

I'm just looking to tap into the experience of the community here to see if anyone can give me some tips.

The scenario I would like to enable is to let registered users of a site be able to customise their page layouts.

The way I'm envisioning it is presenting them with a range of zones and a way to add / remove widgets to them. Drag and drop functionality would be nice to edit it. An option to edit properties of the widgets to customise them.

If anyone remembers the DropThings framework then this is what I'm looking for; https://code.google.com/p/dropthings/

I've done a lot of searching so far but the only thing close that I've come across is Onestop.Layouts (https://bitbucket.org/onestop/module_onestop_layouts/wiki/GettingStarted) but it seems that this is more aimed at experienced administrators rather than basic users.

Any thoughts?

I haven't seen anything like it, except maybe for the Orchard.Layouts module that will be shipped with 1.9. But that's intended to be used with the back end only.
