A few weeks ago, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings launched a technical redesign of its web site at
. We are the non-profit record label of the US national museum here in Washington, D.C. Our web site features a large collection of sound recordings from around the world, along
with a library of related articles, videos, lesson plans and more. We are an educational organization that prides itself on cataloging our materials extensively with lots of rich metadata. In order to meet the needs of our diverse content, a highly extensible
and customizable CMS was required. After much research and consideration we settled on Orchard as our CMS of choice. Customizing Orchard, learning Orchard, and migrating our content was a challenging but ultimately very positive experience. Because of a core
of truly world class developers contributing to the project both in the code and via the discussions here, I personally believe we are part of one of the best open-source communities out there.
Particular credit and praise is due to Sipke Schoorstra (sfmskywalker,
) who we were lucky enough to get to collaborate with on this project. Sipke's contributions were key to our success as he helped us get off the ground with Orchard and trained us to take ownership of his work as he delivered it.
When I got stuck, he unstucked me :) and because of this experience I consider him a great teacher and a friend. Similarly, I view the Orchard community as a whole to be a strong partner in our work here at the Smithsonian.
This is my thank you note to all of you who contribute to this CMS project. THANK YOU!
If you are interested in hearing more about the work we've done here please feel free to get in touch.
All the best,
Webmaster, Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this - as Sipke's partner at IDeliverable, and as a member of the Orchard community, I'm very happy to read your positive feedback! The site looks awesome!
