I am trying to index records in my master table. Lets say my master table has thousands of categories. I would like to index these categories (say category name property) and its not a content item. How do I achieve this?

If it is difficult or not possible out of the box, do I have to go with ContentItem technique for each category?, would it affect DB performance due to a bloated ContentItemRecord table which will be used for every other requests?

You can do this from AlterTable().

It was my bad. I should have mentioned about Lucene when indexing the data.

I just updated the thread title to include Lucene.

I've never done that but you should be able to: take a look at IIndexProvider, you can use that directly to interact with the index provider underlying Indexing.
