I am trying to get up and running building a simple site for a  school class resource. I have found it difficult trying to put worksheets on the pages.

Could anyone point me in the right direction

Cheers

Could you describe what sort of difficulties?

I am trying to upload pdf's from a computer so kid's can access lesson content after school.  I have zipped the file but when I try to add media it does not work for me.

Obviously I am doing something basic wrong but am struggling to work out what.

Thanks

How does it not work? (you do not need to zip the file by the way, that's only useful if you need to upload a bunch)

When I go to the content area on the dashboard and try to insert media  to one of the pages I have to create a folder. When I try to upload a pdf from the file I have zipped it will not load.

I am fine with updating text adding links etc. It is just this part where I might want to have an excel file etc on the page.

I assume the Media  is just for images and I should be doing  some thing else to create a list  for documents.

Apologies if this seems very basic

Thanks

Media can now support more than images. Can you explain, step by step, what you are trying to do and how it fails? Any error messages?

I have installed a theme and started to change the content.

I added some links by going to content area and editing the page.

In the same area I have tried to add Media. This is within the body  and clicking on the Insert/Update Media

If  I add a image there is no problem and it displays within the body

However if I go to the Browse Media and open the folder with the pdf files. When I try to upload a  file  another browser window opens and  in the URL about:blank is displayed.

Ah, yes, the media gallery can take documents, but the media picker can't. You can copy the link from the "embed" field that is on the details page for the document (browse to the document from the Media section of the admin and select the document).

Am I really right in thinking that there's really no way to insert a link to a file in Orchard? This seems like an extremely basic feature and when evaluating CMSs I almost cannot believe it cannot do this. Surely it's a really common thing to link to a PDF or a ZIP download and yet Orchard seems to provide no way of doing this by default. If you try and insert a link to the PDF using the insert media function, it incorrectly links to the PDF as an image and inserts the following code into the page:
<img src="/Media/Default/pdfs/product-manual.pdf" alt="" />
...which obviously doesn't work. Am I doing something stupid?

How do I make it insert a normal hyperlink to a PDF without manually copying and pasting the URL? Most CMS's (eg Composite C1) just let you pick the file from the media browser and then it inserts the correct HTML, but Orchard doesn't have a browser on the link function at all (not even for linking to other pages in the CMS!) and the media browser doesn't write out the correct code for anything other than images (if it only works with images, why have they called it "media"?).

File a bug, and fix it.
