I have a question concerning alternates in my theme. I am designing a theme based on TheThemeMachine. I want to be able to put a search bar and a shopping cart item count in the BeforeMain zone. I created a Zone-BeforeMain.cshtml file and put those in there but nothing is showing up.

Do I need a widget of some kind in that zone? Do I need to put something in the placement file?

The easiest option would be to use a widget - as you mentioned, and placing it in the BeforeMain Zone. Using Layers to dictate where your search and shopping cart item count should be displayed.
