Widget without content part?

I'm working on a website which will use an external database for displaying content.

Like I'm used in SharePoint I would like to create a widget (webpart) to just display data retrieved from that external database (via a web service). The layout will be defined by views in my widget (module?).

After searching a while I came to the conclusion that all documentation regarding widgets talk about creating content parts, migrations etc.

Do I have to create a content part and stuff to be able to add my widget to a zone?

Yes. To my knowledge that's the only way you can create a widget, however in Orchard 1.5 there's supposedly a slightly easier way to create widgets, see here, but I think since you wan to get data from an external source/Database then to achieve that functionality you need to write code. Check out skywalker's module development tutorial. You should create content parts/modules for the sake of learning and getting rid of the mental block.
