I'm trying to create a custom Metro theme, and I want to be able to insert square  non interactive spacers between the square menu items.  The spacers will either be blank (invisible) or just a simple border.  Essentially, what I need to do is be able add menu items with different CSS classes.  Any ideas...

This sounds essentially like a CSS question, not Orchard specific. This may not be the best forum for such things...

You can override the MenuItem.cshtml shape and add necessary CSS classes - typed by hand or based on some MenuItem property. You could also try the Advanced Menu module - it allows you to specify additional classes for each menu item and renders the same markup as the default one.
